  1. A monetary unit containing 100 cents, adopted
  2. as the standard unit in the USA in 1785; also
  3. by Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and a number
  4. of other countries. Large reserves of US
  5. dollars accumulated in Asia. Singapore became
  6. from 1968 the centre of the Asian dollar
  7. market, working in cooperation with London.
  8. Following the depreciation of the US dollar
  9. after the Vietnam War expenditure and the oil
  10. crisis of 1973, the European monetary system
  11. became anchored to the German mark, and in
  12. Asia the Japanese yen became important as a
